The Chillquick Thermo heat pump offers the best conditions for salmon cultivation
The heat pump solution helps maintain the ideal growth conditions at EM-Lax, Sweden’s largest fish farm. In combination, the efficient Chillquick Thermo heat pump and four compressors generate 180 kW of heat, which spurs the female fish to lay eggs earlier in the year and speeds up the growth of the young fish. If the water temperature exceeds 18 °C, the fish begin to suffer. To guarantee optimal conditions for the fish, precise control of the heating is essential.
Usability as a primary criterion
A special solution was developed for the control of the Chillquick Thermo heat pump compressors to enable them to be switched off one at a time. The system must be rinsed regularly, with the compressors switched off for the rinsing process. On the other hand, as the system starts with a slight delay, the fish farm wants to keep it running at a low level at all times. Therefore, usability is one of the main criteria for the company’s heating system.
Disruption-free operations with high efficacy
‘The entire heating system has worked without any hitches,’ says the fish farm owner Rydhom. If the operations of the heat pump, however, became disrupted, the water temperature would not decrease immediately because 95% of the heat required by the cultivation process is generated by the system’s large heat exchanger, which recovers heat from the ponds’ drainage water. The system also contains a smaller heat exchanger, which is used to recover waste heat generated by the heat pump. With this process, the heat loss from the walls, roof and windows can be replaced. The system offers extremely high thermal efficiency.
