From Waste to Worth

The Kivis Shopping Mall in Vantaa, Finland, offers a wide variety of retail spaces and services, including several grocery stores. The building holds a Class A Energy Rating and has earned a LEED Gold certification for its sustainability.

Energy efficiency was built into every part of the project—from the envelope to the technical systems. The roof was equipped with a solar power plant, and most of the heating and cooling comes from a ground-source (geothermal) heat pump system.

Meeting the building’s ambitious environmental goals required equally high-performing technical solutions. The systems had to support the efficient use of renewable energy (like geothermal and solar), while capturing and storing waste heat from cooling processes in energy wells for later use.

Delivered Solution:

Chiller was involved in the project from early on, supporting sizing and system design in close cooperation with the client and design team. The aim was to deliver a reliable, energy-efficient, and cost-effective solution for both heating and cooling, all while maximizing the use of recovered heat.

The property was equipped with a pre-assembled, factory-built Chiller Heat Pump Station, guaranteeing consistent quality and speeding up both installation and commissioning—a proven Chiller method that reduces installation errors and saves valuable floor space.

The system is tailored to meet all the property’s heating and cooling demands while making use of the excess heat from the store’s refrigeration system. It also stores the surplus heat in energy wells, making it available again when heating is needed.

The result is a smart, scalable solution that reduces reliance on district heating and significantly lowers the building’s carbon footprint, helping the Kivis Shopping Mall reach its sustainability targets with great confidence.
